Mendoncino County's first vines were planted here in Redwood Valley when settlers arrived in the 1850s. The cool conditions provided by the high elevation of Redwood Valley allows the grapes to ripen slowly throughout the growing season. This factor combined with the AVA's red soil produces unique Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.
