Nesteled into the Santa Lucia range, Carmel Valley is a pastoral river valley that was first planted by Father Junipero Serra in the 1800s. The Cachagua region of Carmel Valley is the primary grape growing area; translated from the local Native American dialect as "Hidden Springs," this region is named for its underground water source. Carmel's days are warm with an average summer high temperature of 71°F, the nights receive cool mountain air and the gravel terraces allow good drainage. Although the AVA is over 19,000 acres in size only 250 acres are planted, most of which are red Bordeaux varietals.
