Green Valley of Sonoma County

Not to be confused with the Green Valley of Solano County, Sonoma County's Green Valley is found in the coolest enclave of the Russian River Valley AVA. The region is so cool, in fact, the grapes take a secondary importance to other fruit crops such as apples, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and cherries. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive here (and have been receiving world recognition), as do varietals that prefer the nippy weather, such as Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc. The cool weather causes the region to have one of the longest growing seasons in California. 10 wineries currently call Green Valley home, and they have planted over 1,200 acres of vines. Wines carrying the Green Valley designation are hard to find, as many wineries prefer to use the Russian River Valley name because of its greater reknown.
