A hybrid red grape of Germany that is gaining momentum in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions. Actually a hybrid made from the crossing of two hybrids, the Dornfelder can lay a claim to many central European varietals in its lineage. This varietal shows productivity and excellent pigment for such northerly climates. Dornfelders have medium to high levels of acidity, take well to oak and can benefit from bottle aging. Aromas and flavors of black raspberries, currants and touches of sweet spices are common.
