In 1982, Dan Morgan Lee and his wife Donna founded Morgan winery in Monterey County, California. They planted 38 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines on their Double L vineyard, which is a certified organic vineyard located at the northern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands. The upper tier of the Double L has a clay sub-soil, while the lower tier of the vineyard has a sand sub-soil. Morgan's winemaking operations take place at their facility in Salinas, which is 15 miles northwest of Double L vineyard, and they will soon build a state-of-the-art facility on the vineyard.
Morgan specializes in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Dan Lee hand-selects each of the vine clones that is planted in their vineyards. Morgan uses French oak barrels for vinification of all of their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the only exception being the Metallico Chardonnay, which is is fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in neutral French oak. They have also planted Syrah, although to a lesser extent. Their winemaking goals are to be true to the variety, have great balance, complexity and ageability, and to be enjoyable upon release, while their organic vineyard practices allow the wines to be true to the terroir.
Morgan Winery was the Winegeeks.com Producer of the Month in June, 2005.
