“C” appellations

Coteaux de Pierrevert

An interesting little appelletion on the border between the Rhône and Provence, located just to the east of Côtes du Lubéron, though Coteaux de Pierrevert is technically in Provence. Promoted to AC status in July of 1998, Coteaux de Pierrevert borders the Alpes Maritimes, and has some of the highest vineyards in France.

For many years the wines produced here were dull and forgettable, but recent attention has been placed on modern winemaking techniques and a few hectares have been planted to more internationally exciting varietals such as Chardonnay and Cabernet. Red wine constitutes 60% of the wine produced here and must contain a minimum of 50% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Rosé wines make up 30% of the total production and are made from the same varieties. Only 10% of the wine produced is white, and this must consist of at least two different grapes, with neither exceeding 70% of the total.
