Along with Canon-Fronsac this is one of the up-and-coming regions of Bordeaux. For years Canon Fronsac and Fronsac were known for producing quality wines that were more famous than those of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol located just to the east over the river Isle. As the quality and fame of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion rose, the fame and fortunes of Fronsac and Canon Fronsac fell.
The land on this side of the Dordogne is elevated on top of a limetone ridge, and this high elevation protects the region from the frosts that plague many of the vineyards nearby. Combined Fronsac and Canon Fronsac are about the size of Pomerol. Canon Fronsac is thought of as the better of the two appellations, though they have both made great strides in quality as of late due to investment in wine making practices and vineyard training.
Fronsac is known for producing full and fruity red wines that are made from a majority of Merlot, though high percentages of both Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are included in the wines which can often set them apart from the other less-distinct wines produced nearby. The wines of both Fronsac and Canon Fronsac can be considered great values in a region known for producing some of the most expensive wines in the world.
