“L” appellations

L'Etoile

A miniscule appellation in the heart of the Jura, L'Etoile produces small amounts of white wine only. Though no red can be found, sparkling wine, Vin Jaune and still dry whites can all be found with some surprising quality. Literally translated as "the star," this region takes its name from the nutrient rich limestone soil that contains many fossils that extend into a five-pointed star. This soil is well-suited to producing white wines with high amounts of citrusy acidity.

In addition to dry white wines made from Chardonnay, Poulsard and Savagnin, the same grape varieties are used to produce sparkling wine in the Methode Champenoise fashion that are sold as L'Etoile Mousseux. Another local specialty are the Vin Jaunes made from fortified and oxidized wine. A Flor develops on the top of casks of wine, similar to the production of fino Sherry. These wines have a delicious almond and green olive note that will become more rich with time and develop into a harmonious blend of brulee, smoke and walnuts. Vin Jaunes can also be very long-lived, and will develop in bottle for up to 20 years.
