Mount Veeder
Some of California's steepest vineyards and most remote wineries can be found within Mount Veeder's 25 square miles of land. Mount Veeder is located in the Mayacams mountains, which divide Napa County and Sonoma County. In the center of the appellation stands the 2,677 foot volcanic peak of Mount Veeder, perhaps the reason for the appellation's volcanic and sedimentary soils. The vineyards' high altitudes keep fog from overtaking the vineyards like many other California appellations, with the cool mountain air prevens the grapes from baking in the constant sun. The steep grades prevent machinery from being used in the most of the vineyards, meaning most Mount Veeder grapes are picked by hand. Mount Veeder is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, but vintners also grow a fair amount of Chardonnay, as well as Merlot, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc.
