Sometimes you have to wonder why an appellation was created, and the Virginia AVA known as Rocky Knob is just one of the many AVAs that leave consumers scratching their heads. The winery that founded the AVA is no longer in existence and there are currently only two wineries located in the AVA. Rocky Knob is located to the east of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is known for its silt loam and gravel based soils, and the strong winds that hamper the spring frost.
