A vigorous varietal widely grown in central Italy. Best known in Abruzzo where it is known for producing wines of heavy color, extract, smoothness and alcohol. Also grown in The Marches where it is a part of such blends as Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. The Montepulciano ripens late and is best consumed young. Wines from the Montepulciano are rich with red and black fruits. Not to be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano which is made in the same region but from the Sangiovese grape.
