Pineau d'Aunis is a popular grape in the Saumur appellation in France's Loire Valley. It was popular with noble families between the 13th and 15th centuries, and is still used today to make spicy reds and roses. Perhaps the most notable characteristic of Pineau d'Aunis is the distinct scent and taste of #2 pencil lead.
