One of the greatest of the varietals grown in the Duoro valley in northern Portugal for use in the delicious fortified wines of Oporto. Tinta Cão has a particularly tough skin, which sometimes can hamper ripening if the vine is grown in very warm areas or has too high a yield. When grown at higher elevations Tinta Cão can have an intensely floral and spicy aroma with hints of black cherries and Christmas spices that can add a certain character to the final port blend.
