John Caldwell originally had designs for building houses on his Napa Valley property, but was prevented from doing so by bureaucratic roadblocks. Instead, he set his sights on the great red juice. His first block of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc was planted in 1982. By the early 90s, wineries that purchased his grapes were gaining international notoriety. In 1998, the first Caldwell label was launched and was crafted from the finest block of Caldwell Vineyard. The most notable Caldwell wine is Rocket Science, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.
