The Von Neippurg counts, descendants of Franconian nobility, first planted vines on their estate in the 13th century. Today, Count Stephan von Neippurg manages the family's four estates in St.-Emilion. Château Canon-la-Gaffelière is a St.-Emilion Grand Cru Classé and is made with 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is fermented primarily in new French oak for 17 to 19 months with 5,000 to 7,500 cases being produced each year. The Château Canon-la-Gaffelière vineyard consists of 19.5 hectares on the southern slopes overlooking the town of St.-Emilion. The vineyard has a clay-limestone base with sandy soil at the foot of the hillside.
