wombl reviewed Wily Jack Zinfandel California 2008 on February 19, 2011

Yes – I confess – I buy wine also because of the label and the marketing strategy and as a surprise, in the most cases it is a good decision. Wily Jack as such an example where I picked the vine because of the label and because I never tried a Zinfandel before.
A nice and fresh marketing concept: http://www.wilyjack.com/
With its plumy and cinnamon taste Wily Jack suited our dinner (Riccioli with Mediterranean vegetables and feta cheese) well. The discreet vanilla and roasted aromas from French oaks completed the taste of the dinner.

Grown up in Franconia, I’m always hunting for really dry Rieslings for acceptable prices, usually without any success. If the vines label talks about a semi dry or vine with sweetness, I pass; won’t be dry enough anyway. So I was positive surprised when Firesteed’s Riesling 2008 mentioned “passion for Dry Riesling” and I gave it a try. What I found was a well complex vine with a crisp mineral taste. Not as dry as I hoped, but the vibrant acidity perfectly suited our dinner (natural pan fried NJ flounders with potatoes and white asparagus). The melon and orange aroma is well companied with a little bit of honey sweetness. No sugary fruitiness which can overwhelm a fine fish filet.
